What is an MRD in a Hospital?
MRD stands for Medical Records Department. The people who run it are among the most consistently in-demand non-clinical staff in Indian healthcare, and among the least visible.
In short
A Medical Records Officer runs the MRD — the Medical Records Department — which owns every patient record a hospital holds: how it is coded, stored, retrieved, released and legally defended. It is the hospital's memory, and its legal spine.
Full form: Medical Records Department
Every clinical encounter in a hospital produces a record, and that record is not just paperwork. It is the basis on which the next doctor treats the patient, on which the insurer pays or refuses the claim, on which NABH accreditation is granted or withheld, and on which the hospital defends itself if the case ends up in court. The Medical Records Department owns all of it.
The work is more technical than the title suggests. Modern MRD roles involve ICD coding, auditing case sheets for completeness and compliance, managing electronic and physical retention, controlling who is legally permitted to access a record, and turning around medico-legal and insurance requests within statutory timelines. Coding accuracy in particular has a direct revenue consequence — a miscoded case sheet is a rejected claim.
It is also one of the more reliable career entries in healthcare for someone who wants hospital work without clinical practice. Demand is steady, the skills transfer across hospitals, and the shift toward electronic health records and health-information management has raised the ceiling on the role rather than lowered it.
