Anaesthesia is the branch of medicine where problems develop in seconds. The anaesthesiologist manages the patient's airway, consciousness and vital functions throughout an operation — and depends entirely on the machine working, the circuit being intact, the drugs being drawn and labelled correctly, and the difficult-airway trolley being where it should be. That preparation and support is the anesthesia technician's job.
The work spans the whole case. Before surgery: checking and calibrating the anaesthesia workstation, assembling circuits, preparing drugs, verifying monitors and emergency equipment. During: assisting with induction, intubation and line placement, monitoring equipment function, and handing across what is needed without being asked twice. After: decontaminating, restocking, and resetting the theatre for the next case.
It is a role where competence is quiet and errors are not. For allied-health candidates it offers steady demand — every operating theatre needs technicians, and surgical volume in India keeps rising — with a defined skill set that transfers cleanly between hospitals.
Responsibilities
- Checking, calibrating and troubleshooting the anaesthesia workstation before every case
- Assembling and verifying breathing circuits, vaporisers and gas supply
- Preparing, labelling and checking anaesthetic drugs to protocol
- Assisting the anaesthesiologist during induction, intubation and line placement
- Setting up and monitoring patient monitoring equipment through the case
- Maintaining the difficult-airway trolley and emergency equipment readiness
- Decontamination, sterilisation and restocking between cases
- Maintaining equipment logs and coordinating biomedical servicing
Qualifications
- B.Sc or Diploma in Anaesthesia Technology / Anaesthesia Technician programme
- Some hospitals accept OT Technology graduates with anaesthesia training
- BLS certification is commonly expected
- Freshers are hired — most hospitals train on their specific equipment
- Rotating shifts and on-call for emergency theatre are part of the role
