Operation Theatre (OT) Technician
OT stands for Operation Theatre. It is one of the highest-demand allied-health roles in Indian hospitals, and one of the few where a fresher can be scrubbed into a live case within weeks of qualifying.
In short
An OT technician — operation theatre technician — prepares the theatre, owns the sterile field and manages the instruments the surgical team needs, case after case. The surgeon operates; the OT technician makes sure everything the operation depends on is sterile, present and counted.
An operation is a clinical problem wrapped in a logistics one. The right instruments have to be sterile, laid out and passed at the right moment; the field has to stay uncontaminated for hours; the diathermy, suction and lighting have to work; and at the end, every sponge and needle that went in has to be accounted for. A surgeon cannot do that and operate at the same time. The OT technician is why they do not have to.
The work runs the length of the case and then starts again. Before: setting up the theatre, checking equipment, opening sterile sets, positioning and draping the patient. During: scrubbing in, guarding the sterile field, passing instruments — ideally before you are asked for them — handling specimens, and running the counts. After: decontamination, sending sets to CSSD, restocking, and turning the theatre around for the next patient on a list that is already running late.
It is a role with steady demand — every theatre needs technicians, surgical volume in India keeps rising, and the skills transfer cleanly between hospitals. The honest part is that it is physically hard. Long cases are spent standing still and concentrating, emergency lists do not respect your roster, and the pay ceiling in a general theatre is modest. The technicians who move past it are the ones who specialise into cardiac, neuro or transplant lists, or into CSSD and theatre in-charge roles.
Responsibilities
- Preparing the theatre before every case — table, lighting, suction, diathermy and equipment checks
- Opening sterile sets and setting up the sterile field, then guarding it for the length of the case
- Scrubbing in as part of the surgical team and passing instruments through the operation
- Instrument, sponge and needle counts before closure — a legal safety check, not a formality
- Assisting with patient positioning, transfer and draping
- Handling and labelling surgical specimens for histopathology
- Decontamination, CSSD coordination and sterilisation of instrument sets
- Restocking consumables and turning the theatre around between cases
- Maintaining theatre logs, implant records and equipment maintenance records
Qualifications
- B.Sc or Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology (OTT) — the standard route
- Combined OT & Anaesthesia Technology graduates are accepted for either post by many hospitals
- BLS certification is commonly expected
- Freshers are hired routinely — hospitals train you on their own instrument sets and specialties
- Rotating shifts and emergency-theatre on-call are intrinsic to the role

₹2 – ₹5 lakh per annum
Indicative market range in India for OT technician roles. Corporate hospitals and high-volume surgical centres in metros sit at the higher end, and technicians who work specialised lists — cardiac, neuro, transplant — command more. Night and on-call allowances are common because emergency theatre needs cover around the clock.
